The Ford ST170 which has factory VVT can lose over 40 lb/ft of torque without the VVT working - and traditionally before ECUs could offer correct, OEM like closed loop control, most would either lock the cams, or replace them - neither of which give the same return per investment as simply using the stock control system with a capable ECU such as the ME221/ME442.
