What Are Crank and Cam Trigger Patterns?
A crank and cam trigger pattern is a series of signals generated by sensors that monitor the position and speed of the engine’s crankshaft and camshaft. These signals are critical for the proper operation of an Engine Control Unit (ECU), allowing it to control ignition timing, fuel injection, and other engine functions with precision.
Crank Trigger Pattern
The crank trigger pattern is created by a Hall effect or inductive sensor reading a toothed wheel attached to the crankshaft. This pattern provides real-time data on the crankshaft’s rotational speed and position. The number and spacing of the teeth allow the ECU to determine the exact position of the crankshaft at any moment.
Cam Trigger Pattern
The cam trigger pattern is generated by a sensor reading a toothed wheel or notches on the camshaft. This pattern is essential for determining valve timing and ensuring the engine operates in the correct phase (intake vs. exhaust stroke).
Why Are Crank and Cam Trigger Patterns Important for the ECU?
✅ Precise Timing – The ECU uses crank and cam trigger patterns to synchronize fuel injection and ignition timing, ensuring optimal performance, fuel efficiency, and emissions control.
✅ Engine Phase Identification – The camshaft signal helps the ECU differentiate between the intake and exhaust strokes, allowing for sequential fuel injection and variable valve timing (VVT).
✅ Error Detection – The ECU continuously monitors these signals to detect misfires, incorrect timing, or sensor malfunctions, making real-time adjustments or triggering diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) when necessary.
Without accurate crank and cam trigger patterns, the ECU cannot properly control engine operations, which can lead to poor performance, increased emissions, and potential engine damage.
Supported Trigger Patterns
To ensure maximum compatibility with a wide range of engines, our universal wire-in ECUs come pre-programmed with multiple crank and cam trigger patterns.
